The book Crime and Punishment, how close to reality is it?

The duality that the protagonist of this story presents is the confrontation he has after having committed a murder even knowing that he did not steal the loot she had and that he simply killed her because he did not consider her useful to society. It shows us a brilliant and delusional mind in the protagonist or what do you think about the subject?
